- Help the cell to differentiate and detect the enormous signals it receives.
- Also it augments the signals incorporate them into a specific response in
the cell’s interior like expression of a particular gene or enzymatic activity.
Extracellular signals present an effectual information metabolism by means of the
following steps.
- The onset of signal transduction starts with the synthesis of the
signaling molecule by the signaling cell.
- It is released out of the cell and transported to the target cell.
- The specific receptor protein in the target cell detects and
receives the signal, thus leads to the development of a receptorsignal
complex.
- This complex triggers the interior of the cell to produce the
required response like production of an enzyme, or changes in the function of the cell. Here the signal received in the form of a
particular chemical substance is converted (transduced) into
other chemical forms.
- The signaling process comes to an end when the signal is
removed, as a result the cellular response also terminates.
Extracellular signal → Reception → Amplification → Transduction → Response
The most important molecules which participate in the signal transduction are
hormones, pheromones, neurotransmitters, growth factors, cell surface receptors,
and the second messengers like cyclicAMP (cAMP).
