For bad bacteria to grow, it is important that the level of pH is more than 3.5. A low pH environment is ideal for the development of good bacteria. Lactic Acid has a pH level of 3.5 or lower, so bad bacteria cannot survive in this kind of environment. The proportion between good and bad bacteria in the intestinal tract has to be maintained somewhere between 85% good bacteria and 15% bad.
