Portland cement is manufactured by burning a mix of calcium carbonate (limestone or chalk) and an aluminosilicate(clay or shale) and then grinding the product with approximately 5% gypsum to produce cement.
It is called "Portland Cement" because it is similar to Portland StoneĀ which was quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England.
The term was first coined by Joseph Aspdin in 1824.
