For a single organism some form of ingestion of nutrients and respiration, either naturally or by artificial means. Our bodies cannot survive without the nutrients from which we build/re-build our tissues. In addition the brain cannot survive without oxygen for over 6 minutes and our other systems will stop working as well.
If we were talking about a group then some form of reproduction would also be considered essential.
