In ergonomics, noise refers to any disagreeable of undesired sound. Presence of noise in the working environment causes many problems. It interferes with communication by making it difficult to separate communication by sound with the noise. Thus it reduces the intelligibility of speech and by raising the acoustic threshold. In this way sound hinders communication and masks sound signals.

Very high levels of sound may also cause health problems. Prolonged exposure to noise above certain levels can lead to permanent damage to hearing ability including deafness.

Noise also causes distraction in intellectual work requiring mental concentration. I this respect intermittent noise such as that from heavy mechanical presses can be particularly distracting.
