Proper light make it easier to see the workpiece and the work being performed, and to distinguish between colours. The impact of lighting on work performance increases directly with contribution of vision to performance of a task.
Peoples ability to see declines with age. in particular there is marked reduction after age of about 40 years. The deterioration in near vision is more marked than that in distance vision. The ability of pupil of the eyes to adjust to the different level of illumination, in terms of range of illumination and speed of adjustment, also decreases with age. Also the elderly people have greater difficulty in sorting of colours. Also there is increased blurring of the image in the eyes which also reduces the level of contrast produced in the image in the eyes. The reduction in acuity or the ability of eyes to focus correctly with age that can be corrected with glasses is well known. Elderly people are also affected more by glare.
From the above discussion on effect of age on the visual ability, it becomes clear that special attention needs to be paid for designing illumination system for the elderly people. In general elderly people need better levels of illumination than the younger people, and the improvement in performance with same amount of improvement in illumination is more for the elderly than for the young. The importance of glare control also increases rapidly with advancing age.
