Manual lifting techniques are broadly divided in two two types. First is lifting with straight knees and bent back, and the second is lifting with a straight back and and bent knees.
The second techniques is the one that has been recommended in the past by many different organizations including by International Labour Organization. However in recent years some limitation of these techniques have become increasingly apparent. For example, this technique applies only to small load which can be held between the legs while lifting. Thus for many lifts this technique is difficult and awkward.
However following general guidelines are useful for manual lifting of heavy loads.
- Keep the load close to the body.
- It is preferable to use thigh and leg muscles rather than back muscles for the lifting action.
- Get a firm grip in the load.
- Keep load at a height where it does not interfere with your vision.
- While carrying load pivot with feet rather than twisting the back.Lower the loads slowly and smoothly.
- Do not attempt to lift by your self loads that are too heavy. Either get some help or use some lifting and carrying device.
- Wear clothes that are comfortable around hips, knees and shoulder.
