Avoiding breaking of a microscope is a matter of handling, for example: when you are moving a microscope from a place to the other, you have to  grasp it in this way: with one hand you will grab the arm and with the other hand you'll place it under it's support, in this way, you'll avoid, by supporting it, the possibility that the arm to carry by itself the entire mass of the microscope.

The swinging movement, during the process of  microscope moving, is also denied, because it is possible to drop the microscope.

Obviously, handling the microscope with gentle moves, but not only, you'll extend it's life. A maintenance manual (handling guide) would be useful, also.
