What are the U.S. and metric units of measurement for area?

What follows is a partial listing of the many ways in which measurements of area are expressed in both U.S. and metric systems. "Area" describes a two-dimensional (flat) space and is expressed in square units, such as square inches.

U.S. customary area measures
