Who was the first man in space?

Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), a cosmonaut from the former Soviet Union, became the first man in space on April 12, 1961. Gagarin made a full orbit of the Earth in the spacecraft Vostok I. Gagarin's flight lasted only 1 hour and 48 minutes. As the first man in space, he became an international hero.

The first American in space was Alan B. Shepard Jr. (1923-). On May 5, 1961, Shepard flew aboard Freedom 7. This flight only reached an altitude of 116.5 miles (187.45 kilometers), which is below the altitude necessary to orbit the Earth.
