Who is Stephen Hawking?

Stephen Hawking (1943—), a British physicist (a scientist who studies the interactions between matter and energy) and mathematician, is considered to be the greatest theoretical physicist of the late twentieth century. In spite of being severely handicapped by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a muscular disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, he has made major contributions to the field of astronomy. In particular, Hawking has vastly increased our understanding of black holes. He has also explored the origin and evolution of the universe (all matter and energy including the Earth, the galaxies, and the contents of space as a whole) through his research into the nature of space-time (the four-dimensional construct involving the three dimensions of space, plus time).
