A meteorite is a chunk of rock and/or metal that has broken off a larger space object, such as an asteroid (rocky chunks of matter in orbit around the sun) or comet (celestial bodies that have tails and follow an orbit around the sun), and strikes the Earth's surface. The famous Willamette (Oregon) iron, displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, is the largest specimen found in the United States.
