Fruit trees and other valuable trees can be protected from field mice by wrapping wire, wood veneer, or plastic around their trunks. Other methods of repelling rodents include placing garlic-soaked pieces of lava rocks around the tree and covering the area with a garlic spray.

These pests have now spread to 25 states, mostly in the northeastern United States. Scattered locations throughout Michigan and Oregon have also reported gypsy moth infestations.
