Metals and Other Materials - Which Countries Have Uranium Deposits?
Which countries have uranium deposits?
Uranium deposits are located in many parts of the world. Uranium is most plentiful in Canada and the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). Other significant uranium resources are found in the United States (especially Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Utah), France, South Africa, Australia, and the former Soviet Union.
Uranium is a radioactive metallic element, meaning that its atomic nuclei undergo changes and emit radiation. Uranium is also the only natural material capable of sustaining nuclear fission—the process of splitting atoms used in the production of nuclear power. However, only one isotope, uranium-235, is suitable for fission. (Isotopes are different forms of an element, each having a unique atomic weight.) Only one molecule out of every 40 natural uranium molecules is the isotope uranium-235.
