South Africa is by far the leading producer of gold. Since the breakup of the former Soviet Union in 1991, the United States has become the second largest gold-producing nation. In the United States, Nevada is the leading gold-producing state. California runs a distant second, followed by South Dakota.
Commercial usage of gold in 1993 was estimated as follows: jewelry and arts, 71 percent; industrial (mainly electronic), 22 percent; and dental, 7 percent.
