A googol is 10100 (the number 1 followed by 100 zeros). Unlike most other names for numbers, it is not part of any particular numbering scale. The American mathematician Edward Kasner first used the term "googol" in 1938. The name for this very large number was suggested by Kasner's nine-year-old nephew. The term googolplex describes the number 1 followed by a googol of zeros, represented as l0googol (1010100).
