What safety rules should be observed during a thunderstorm?

  1. Go inside a sturdy building. A shed or flimsy structure will not protect you from lightning. Once indoors, do not talk on the telephone (cordless and cellular phones are safe); take a bath or shower; or handle electrical appliances, computers, or plumbing fixtures, until the storm has passed. It's safest to unplug all electrical appliances except a radio, so you can stay informed of severe weather alerts.
  2. If you're not near a building when lightning threatens, the next safest option is to get into your car (as long as it's not a convertible!) and keep the windows rolled up. Do not touch the metal sides of the car.
  3. If you're outdoors, far from buildings and vehicles, go to the lowest spot in the vicinity and crouch down. Keep away from trees, fences, and poles. If you're in the woods, stay away from the tallest...
