Heatstroke is more serious than heat exhaustion. However, heat exhaustion left untreated leads to heatstroke. Heat exhaustion occurs when a person does not get enough liquid, especially water, and salt in very hot, humid weather. Heatstroke is caused by the body not being able to regulate its own temperature due to intensive sweating under conditions of high heat and humidity. Older people are usually more susceptible to heatstroke.
Heat exhaustion is characterized by excessive sweating, weakness, dizziness, and sometimes heat cramps. The skin is usually cold, the pulse is thready, and blood pressure is low. Although vomiting may occur as a result of heat exhaustion, the victim usually remains conscious. The symptoms of heatstroke may include: weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and heat cramps.
