The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, commonly referred to as the Great Exhibition of 1851 or the Crystal Palace Exhibition, was the first true world's fair. Held in London, England, it ran from May 1 to October 15, 1851. Following on the success of London's Fair, the first world's fair in the United States was held from July 14, 1853, to November 1, 1854, in New York City.

One of the most memorable displays of the Great Exhibition of 1851 was the "Crystal Palace," a huge building constructed of metal and glass. There were also several important exhibits from the United States, among them a precision mass-produced Colt revolver, a sewing machine, a display of rubber products from the Goodyear Company, and the McCormick reaper (a machine for harvesting crops).
