Percy Lavon Julian (1899-1975), a grandson of a former slave, is noted for his work on synthesizing (artificially making) hormones and medicinal substances, as well as for developing many industrial uses for plant products. He obtained 130 chemical patents in his lifetime.

In 1935, Julian made physostigmine, a powerful drug for the treatment of the disease glaucoma (the build-up of pressure inside the eyeball that gradually destroys the retina, causing blindness). A year later he isolated and prepared a soybean protein that could be used as a chemical fire-extinguishing foam.

Julian also developed a method of producing cortisone, a substance used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (a chronic disease characterized by stiffness and inflammation of the joints) and other inflammatory diseases.
