How many species of plants and animals are threatened in the United States?

According to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, there are two categories into which species may be placed: threatened and endangered. Threatened means "likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range [the geographic area in which a kind of animal or plant normally lives or grows]." Endangered means "in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range." Presently there are 206 threatened species (114 animals and 92 plants) and 754 endangered species (320 animals and 434 plants) in the United States.
