Which countries consume the most energy?
One study projects that by the year 2010, the largest consumers are still expected to be the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China. It predicts that between 1990 and 2012, China will increase its average annual energy consumption at twice the rate of the rest of the world. BTU stands for British thermal unit: the quantity of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by 1° Fahrenheit.

| United States | 24.6% | 85.8 | 95.1 |
| Former Soviet Union | 14.7% | ...
