What and where is the Continental Divide of North America?
The Continental Divide, also known as the "great divide," is a continuous ridge of peaks in the Rocky Mountains that marks the boundary between eastward flowing waters and westward flowing waters in North America. To the east of the Continental Divide, water flows eastward into the Hudson Bay or the Mississippi River before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. To the west of the Continental Divide, water generally flows westward through the Columbia River or the Colorado River on its way to the Pacific Ocean.
