From what type of stone was Mount Rushmore National Monument carved?

The Mount Rushmore National Monument is carved from granite. Located in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, the monument depicts the faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Each of the faces is 60 feet (18 meters) high.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) designed the monument but died before its completion. His son, Lincoln, finished the project. From 1927 to 1941, 360 people, mostly construction workers, drillers, and miners, "carved" the monument using dynamite.
