Cellular phones are mobile telephones that send signals over radio waves. They can be used in automobiles or by pedestrians, across an area of hundreds of square miles. There are three types of cellular phones. The first type, the car phone, functions only when attached to an automobile. It is powered by the car's battery and has an antenna that must be mounted outside the vehicle.
The second type is the transportable phone, or bag phone. This is a mobile phone with its own battery pack that can be detached from a car and carried in a pouch. However, most bag phones are large and weigh about 5 pounds (2.25 kilograms), meaning they are not very practical to carry around.
The third type is the portable cellular phone. Similar in appearance to a cordless phone handset, a portable phone generally weighs less than one-third of a pound (120 grams). It is the most...
