Earth station is the term used for a complete satellite receiving or transmitting station. It includes the antenna, electronics, and all associated equipment necessary to receive or transmit satellite signals. Earth stations range from simple, inexpensive, receive-only units that can be purchased by individual consumers, to elaborate, two-way communications systems with commercial access to the satellite. Signals are captured and focused by the antenna and fed into a feedhorn and low noise amplifier. The signals are then relayed by cable to a down-converter (a circuit that converts high-frequency signals from the satellite to lower frequencies that are usable by the receiver), and finally into the satellite receiver.
