Who is generally regarded as the founder of quantum mechanics?
German mathematical physicist (a scientist specializing in the interaction between matter and energy) Werner Karl Heisenberg (1901-1976) is regarded as the father of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is the study of subatomic particles (such as electrons, protons, neutrons, and other particles that are smaller than an atom) and small-scale physical phenomena.
Heisenberg's theory of uncertainty, published in 1927, provided a new way of looking at the energy and motions of subatomic particles. This theory states that it is impossible to specify, with any precision, the position and simultaneous momentum (mass times volume) of a subatomic particle. One can only arrive at estimates for these values. This means that there will always be some measure of uncertainty regarding the result of actions of subatomic particles.
