Where is the longest suspension bridge in the United States?

Spanning New York (City) Harbor, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the United States. Its total length is 7,200 feet (2,194 meters) and it has a main-span (from tower to tower) of 4,260 feet (1,298 meters). Named after Giovanni da Verrazano (1485-1528), the Italian explorer who discovered New York Harbor in April 1524, it was erected under the direction of Othmar H. Ammann (1879-1965) and completed in 1964.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has a clearance of 216 feet (66 meters) between the water level and the bottom of the bridge deck, which is sufficient for large ships to pass beneath. Like other suspension bridges, the bulk of the load (weight) of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is carried on cables that are anchored to the banks.
