Bridges, Buildings, and Other Structures - Where Is The Longest Bridge-Tunnel In The World Located?

Where is the longest bridge-tunnel in the world located?

The world's longest bridge-tunnel is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It is 17.5 miles (28 kilometers) long and connects Norfolk and Cape Charles, Virginia. This combination of trestles (support beams held up by two pairs of legs), bridges, human-made islands, and tunnels traverses the great expanse of deep and open water at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. It is composed mostly of low bridges. There are two tunnels, each of which is more than a mile long, lying beneath the main shipping channels. This bridge-tunnel was completed in 1964 after 42 months of work, at a cost of $200 million.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is rivaled by the Zuider Zee Dam in Holland. The Dutch road-carrying structure is similar in length to the Chesapeake structure; however, it does not cross the same depth of water or length of open sea.
