A dam is a barrier constructed across a waterway to control the rise or flow of the water level. Oroville, the highest dam in the United States, is an earth-fill dam (a dam constructed of several layers of compacted earth) that rises 754 feet (230 meters). It extends more than a mile across the Feather River, near Oroville, California. Built in 1968, it forms a reservoir (a pond or lake used for storing water) containing about 3.5 million acre-feet (4.3 million cubic meters) of water. The Oroville Dam controls flooding and provides irrigation water and hydroelectric power for portions of central and southern California. The next highest dam in the United States is the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River at the Nevada and Arizona border. It is 726 feet (221 meters) high.
