The Eiffel Tower, a 984-foot- (300 meter-) tall wrought iron structure, was constructed over a period of just a few months. It was created as the centerpiece of the 1889 Centennial Exposition in Paris, France. This structure, designed by French engineer Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), revolutionized civil engineering and architectural design. The Eiffel Tower was by far the tallest structure in the world at the time it was constructed.
