The German bacteriologist, Robert Koch (1843-1910), and the French chemist, Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), are considered the founders of modern bacteriology (the study of bacteria). Pasteur devised a way to heat food or beverages at a temperature high enough to kill most of the microorganisms (bacteria) that would cause spoilage and disease, yet not so high that it would destroy the food or beverage. This process is called pasteurization.
Koch demonstrated that tuberculosis was an infectious disease caused by the transmission of bacteria, and was not, as previously believed, an inherited condition. He also isolated the bacteria responsible for the disease cholera. In determining the cause of these and other diseases, Koch laid the groundwork for public health measures that would significantly reduce such diseases. He also developed laboratory procedures for growing...
