What is the origin of the field of biology?
Biology is a broad area of study that deals with all physical and chemical processes associated with living organisms. The year in which the study of biology originated is not known, since it preceded the keeping of written records. However, it has been determined through archaeological finds that primitive humans engaged in agriculture and the domestication (taming) of animals—meaning they had some understanding of biology.
Some of the earliest records of biological study are from the ancient civilizations of Assyria and Babylonia (both located in the Arabian Peninsula). Those records, dating back to around 3500 B.C., show that scientists had a basic knowledge of plant reproduction and practiced veterinary medicine.
