The discovery of vitamins is a story of many people working to understand disease symptoms. In England during the 1700s, it was common for sailors traveling on long voyages to develop bleeding gums, loose teeth, and bruised skin. Some symptoms were more severe and caused many sailors to die. A Scottish naval doctor found that citrus fruits cured the sick sailors, and prevented others from getting ill.
