How can a plant grow from a leaf or stem?

In many plants, cells in the stem tips, root tips, leaves, and certain other areas of the plant are capable of becoming different kinds of plant tissue. These cells allow the stem of a plant to produce roots. They allow the eye, or bud, of a potato to produce both roots that grow downward and shoots that grow upward and become the stems and leaves of a new potato plant.
