Two growing behaviors do not seem to be controlled by auxins. A behavior called hydrotropismThe tendency of roots to grow toward a water source. causes roots to grow toward a water source. This behavior is controlled by cells in the growing areas of the roots that are sensitive to the presence of water. The root cells grow at different rates, bending the root in the direction of the water. Growing toward water increases the plant's chances of survival.
