How they work
In the way that they collect and magnify the light, telescopes make objects appear larger than they are. There are two basic types of telescopes:
refractor telescopes and reflector telescopes. Each goes about enlarging an image in different ways. The amount of light a telescope can collect relates to the size of the lens or mirror used to gather light. Telescopes that have a larger lens or mirror will generally collect more light, and so will detect much fainter objects.
