The positive qualities in polymers—their durability, strength, and lightness—bring with them the challenge of how to get rid of many of these products. Enormous quantities of disposable, synthetic polymers are produced every year in the United States alone. The production of these materials is causing concerns for the environment.

Many of the products are plastics and are not biodegradableCapable of being decomposed by biological agents., meaning that they do not break down naturally and quickly into the raw materials of nature. Plastic soda can rings, for example, can take an estimated four hundred years to break down!
