Purpose/Hypothesis

After you understand how to use indicators, you can begin testing and manipulating chemicals. Here is a general description of how acids and bases mix and the results. Acids produce a H+ particle called a hydrogen ion. Bases produce an OH–particle called a hydroxide ion. These H+ and OH–ions can join to form H2O or water, a neutral substance. The leftover substance is a salt.

The chemical formula for a typical acid-base reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide is illustrated. The resulting products of this reaction are neutral sodium chloride (salt) and water.
