The greenhouse effect has been in the news a lot lately. Why? Carbon dioxide levels began to rise during the late 1700s when machines began doing work that had previously been done by humans and animals. The machines needed fuel to work, and fossil fuelsA fuel such as coal, oil, gasoline, or natural gas that was formed over millions of years from the remains of plants and animals., such as coal and wood, were used. Fossil fuels contain carbon. Burning these fuels releases the carbon, which combines with the oxygen in air to form carbon dioxide. Back in the 1700s, this was not a big problem because there were not as many people or machines. But today, burning fossil fuels such as gasoline has caused a critical situation.
