Finding the Enzyme: Which enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide?
Purpose/Hypothesis
Without enzymes, many chemical reactions do not take place. In this experiment you will identify the presence of an enzyme in liver tissue, known as catalaseAn enzyme found in animal liver tissue that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water., that breaks down highly reactive hydrogen peroxide into harmless water and oxygen. This is an important chemical reaction that takes place inside the body. Catalase prevents the potentially destructive oxidation effects of any hydrogen peroxide that may be generated in the body as the result of various other chemical reactions.
