Chemical Reactions: What happens when mineral oil, water, and iodine mix?

Purpose/Hypothesis

In this experiment, you will mix water with iodine and then add mineral oil to see whether a chemical reaction occurs. Remember the possible signs of a chemical reaction: the production or absorption of heat or light energy, smoke, bubbles of gas, a smell, a sound, and a change in color.

What Are the Variables?

Variables are anything that might affect the results of an experiment. Here are the main variables in this experiment:

  • the amount of iodine added to the water in the experiment
  • the temperature of the ingredients (they will remain at room temperature to control this variable)
  • the kind of oil used (other kinds of oil may react differently)
