Desert biomes are on every major continent and cover more than a fifth of Earth's surface. While these biomes receive less than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rainfall a year, with temperatures that range from 75°F (23°C) to 91°F (32°C), desert plants and animals thrive here. Deserts can usually be found in the centers of continents and in the rain shadows of mountains.
