Unlike its neighboring biome, the tundra, which is treeless and characterized by low-lying plants, the taiga is sometimes called the borealNorthern. (pronounced BORE-e-al) coniferousRefers to trees, such as pines and firs, that bear cones and have needle-like leaves that are not shed all at once. (pronounced CONE-if-er-us) forest and is probably the largest of all the land biomes. The taiga biome extends across the northern parts of North America, Asia, and Europe. It is dominated by coniferous, or cone-bearing, trees such as pine, spruce, larch, and fir.
