Education Benefits for Dependents of POWs and MIAs

(Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: Children and spouses of prisoners of war, or of persons listed as missing in action, are entitled to attend a state-supported school without the payment of tuition or mandatory fees provided they are not eligible for equal or greater federal benefits. Must use SDDVA form E-12 available at financial aid offices. Must be a South Dakota resident intending to study in South Dakota. Qualif.: High school students not considered. Haines Memorial Scholarship

(University/Scholarship)

Purpose: One-time scholarship for South Dakota public university students who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors having at least a 2.5 GPA and majoring in a teacher education program. Include resume with application. Must be South Dakota resident. Focus: Education Qualif.: High school students not considered.

South Dakota Aid to Dependents of Deceased Veterans

(Four Year College, Two Year College/Scholarship)

Purpose: Program provides free tuition for children of deceased veterans who are under the age of 25, are residents of South Dakota, and whose mother or father was killed in action or died of other causes while on active duty. ("Veteran" for this purpose is as defined by South Dakota Codified Laws.) Parent must have been a bona fide resident of SD for at least six months immediately preceding entry into active service. Eligibility is for state-supported schools only. Must use SDDVA form E-12 available at financial aid offices. Qualif.: Applicant must be: age 24 or younger . High school students not considered. South Dakota Board of Regents Annis I. Fowler/Kaden Scholarship

(University/Scholarship)

Purpose: Scholarship for graduating South Dakota high school seniors to pursue a career in elementary education at a South Dakota public university. University must be one of the following: BHSU, BSU, NSU or USD. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 after three years of high school. One-time award. Focus: Education Qualif.: High school students considered.

South Dakota Board of Regents Bjugstad Scholarship

(Four Year College, Two Year College, University, Vocational/Occupational/Scholarship)

Purpose: Scholarship for graduating North or South Dakota high school senior who is a Native-American. Must demonstrate academic achievement, character and leadership abilities. Submit proof of tribal enrollment. One-time award of $500. Must rank in upper half of class or have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Must be pursuing studies in agriculture, agribusiness, or natural resources. Focus: Agriculture; Agribusiness; Natural Resources Qualif.: High school students considered. Award available to the following races: Native American/Eskimo.

Purpose: One-time award for a student who is a junior at a South Dakota public university. Must be nominated by the university. Merit-based. Must have community service and leadership experience. Purpose: Award for tuition assistance for any postsecondary academic year of study to senior citizens age 65 and older. Write for further details. South Dakota Board of Regents State Employee Tuition Assistance

(Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: Award for South Dakota state employees for any postsecondary academic year of study in South Dakota institution. Must be U.S. citizen. Write for requirements and other details. Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens. Award available to employees or relatives of employees within the following industries: designated career field. South Dakota Education Benefits for National Guard Members

(Four Year College, Two Year College, University, Vocational/Occupational/Scholarship)

Purpose: Guard members who meet the requirements for admission are eligible for a 50% reduction in undergraduate tuition charges at any state-supported school for up to a maximum of four academic years. Provision also covers one program of study, approved by the State Board of Education, at any state vocational school. Must be state resident and member of the SD Army or Air Guard throughout period for which benefits are sought. Must contact financial aid office for full details and forms at time of registration. Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens. Award available to members of the following branches of the military: Air National Guard, Army National Guard. South Dakota Education Benefits for Veterans

Purpose: Certain veterans are eligible for free undergraduate tuition assistance at state-supported schools provided they are not eligible for educational payments under the GI Bill or any other federal educational program. Contact financial aid office for full details and forms. May receive one month of free tuition for each month of qualifying service (minimum one year, maximum four years).
