Lester Benz Memorial Scholarship

(University/Scholarship)

Purpose: One-time award to upgrade journalism, teaching, and advising skills. Open to all high school journalism teachers and publication advisers with at least six semester hours of journalism courses and minimum four years teaching and advising experience. Focus: Education; Communications; Journalism Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens. Award available to employees or relatives of employees within the following industries: teaching, journalism.

Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarship in Journalism

(Four Year College, University/Scholarship)

Purpose: Merit-based award for high school seniors planning to major in journalism. Must have won a National Quill and Scroll Writing Award or a Photography or Yearbook Excellence contest. Entry forms available from journalism adviser or Quill and Scroll. Must rank in upper third of class or have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Focus: Journalism Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Funds Avail.: Minimum no. of awards: 8. Maximum no. of awards: 10. Minimum award amount: $500. Maximum award amount: $1500. No. and Amount Awarded Last Calendar Year: 10 scholarship(s), totalling $5,500. Quill and Scroll International Writing/Photo Contest

(Undergraduate/Prize)

Purpose: One-time contest for best journalistic writing/reporting and photographs in several categories. Only high school students may enter. Winners receive gold key in addition to being eligible to apply for journalism scholarships. Contact Quill and Scroll for more details and application. Application fee: $2 per entry.
