Institute/NEH Postdoctoral Fellowship

(Postgraduate, University/Fellowship)

Purpose: Two-year postdoctoral fellowship in any area of early American studies. The candidate's dissertation or other manuscript must have significant potential as a distinguished, book-length contribution to scholarship. A substantial portion of the work must be submitted with the application. Applicants may not have previously published or have under contract a scholarly monograph, and they must have met all requirements for the doctorate before commencing the fellowship. Fellowship is not available to citizens of countries other than the U.S. unless applicant has lived in the U.S. for three years prior to commencing the fellowship. Focus: History Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Jamestown Prize

(Postgraduate, University/Prize)

Purpose: Prize to the author of the best book-length scholarly manuscript (usually based on a PhD dissertation) on early American history or culture. Competition open only to authors who have not published a scholarly book. Previous applicants for the Institute's postdoctoral fellowships are particularly encouraged to apply, but present or past holders of the Institute fellowship are ineligible. The subject of the manuscript must pertain to America before circa 1815 or to the related history of the British Isles, Canada, Europe, West Africa, or the Caribbean. Before submitting a manuscript, please send to the Institute a separate letter indicating interest in the Jamestown Prize. Focus: History Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Institute/Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

(Postgraduate, University/Fellowship)

Purpose: One-year fellowship in any area of early American studies. The award carries a year's support to revise the applicant's first book manuscript and the Institute's commitment to publish the resulting study. The candidate's manuscript must have significant potential for publication as a distinguished, book-length contribution to scholarship. Applicants must submit a completed manuscript and may not have another scholarly monograph under contract. Must have met all requirements for the doctorate at least twelve months prior to commencing the fellowship. Focus: History Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.
