Purpose: An award for an outstanding doctoral dissertation on any aspect of New Jersey History. It is by nomination only and only awarded in even-numbered years. Focus: History Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Mildred Barry Garvin Prize
(Postgraduate/Prize)
Purpose: Prize to a New Jersey teacher, guidance counselor, or school librarian for outstanding teaching of Black American history in Kindergarten through high school or outstanding performance in a related activity such as developing curriculum materials. Must be nominated by their school. Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens. Award available to employees or relatives of employees within the following industries: teaching.

Purpose: Award to the author of an outstanding book on New Jersey history published during the preceding two years. Offered only in odd-numbered years. Nomination form is on the Web site. New Jersey Historical Commission Mini-grants
(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Grant)
Purpose: Grants available to support small projects which are relatively inexpensive and support the mission of the New Jersey Historical Commission. The regular rules for project grants apply (see Web site), however, there is no deadline; they are reviewed bimonthly in January, March, May, August, October, and December. Focus: History Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Grant)
Purpose: Grants available for educational initiatives, research, publications, film, video, radio, or fellowships. Must be non-fiction-producing projects and be beneficial to New Jersey residents or their schools. African-American history projects focusing on the Underground Railroad in New Jersey are of particular interest. Focus: History Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Samuel Smith Fellowships for Research in New Jersey History
(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Fellowship)
Purpose: A limited number of fellowships to support applicants doing major research projects in New Jersey history, including doctoral dissertations and monographs. Awards based on demonstrated expertise and excellence of project description. Established scholars should show record of publication in the field. Graduate students must include letter of recommendation from their dissertation director. Fellowship support can be used for any project expense other than tuition or publication. Focus: History Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.
