Collaborative Research Grants

(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Grant)

Purpose: Provides opportunities for teams of scholars (one or more art historians, or art historians and scholars from other disciplines) to collaborate on interpretive research projects that offer new explanations of art and its history. Also funds research and planning of scholarly exhibitions (these teams should include scholars from both museums and universities). Must submit writing sample and curriculum vitae. Focus: Art History Qualif.: High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Conservation Guest Scholars

(Postgraduate/Grant)

Purpose: Grants for established scholars and professionals that have attained distinction in conservation within their related fields. Scholars are in residence at the Getty Institute for three to nine months. Monthly stipend of $3500 is awarded during residency. Program provides opportunity for professionals to pursue scholarly research in interdisciplinary manner, across traditional boundaries, in areas of wide general interest to the international conservation community. Curatorial Research Fellowships

(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Fellowship)

Purpose: Curatorial Research Fellowships support the professional scholarly development of curators by providing them with time off from regular museum duties to undertake short-term research or study projects. Fellowships are reserved for full-time curators who have a minimum of three years professional experience and are employed at museums with art collections. Must submit writing sample and curriculum vitae. Focus: Art History Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens. Award available to employees or relatives of employees within the following industries: designated career field.

J. Paul Getty Postdoctoral Fellowships in the History of Art

(Four Year College, Postgraduate, University/Fellowship)

Purpose: One-time award for outstanding scholars who have earned a doctoral degree (or the equivalent in countries outside the U.S.) within the past six years. For those who are undertaking interpretive research projects that promise to make a substantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its history. Fellowships are awarded once a year and generally support a research period of twelve months. Award may be used wherever necessary to complete project. Must submit writing sample, a list of publications, and dissertation abstract. Focus: Art History Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. High school students not considered. Award available to U.S. citizens.

Getty Scholar and Visiting Scholar Grants

(Postgraduate/Grant)

Purpose: Grants for established scholars, artists, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Researchers working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences are eligible. Scholars are in residence at Getty Research Institute. Getty scholars receive salary replacement, up to maximum of $75,000. Visiting scholars receive monthly stipend of $3500, up to a maximum of $10,500. See Web site at http://www.getty.edu/grants for details. Library Research Grants

(Postgraduate/Grant)

Purpose: Grant intended for scholars at any level who demonstrate compelling need to use materials in Getty Research Library. Applicant's place of residence must be at least 80 or more miles away from Getty Center. Research period may last several days to maximum three months. Grant only supports one research trip to Getty Center. Grantee may reapply after two years; if project is different, grantee may reapply the next year. Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships

(Postgraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: Fellowships provided to scholars working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Program provides support for emerging scholars to complete their dissertations or expand them for publication. Projects must address the Institute's scholar theme for the particular year. Pre-doctoral fellows receive stipend of $36,000. Postdoctoral fellows receive $44,000. See Web site at http://www.getty.edu/grants for details.
