Medieval History Seminar

Purpose: The Medieval History Seminar is devoted to the latest research in the field of European medieval studies. Like the Transatlantic Doctoral Seminar, this program invites sixteen doctoral students from Europe and North America to discuss their dissertation projects with peers and senior scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. The stipend covers travel and lodging expenses. This seminar is also conducted in English and German. The seminar is held each fall, alternating between venues in Europe and the United States. Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize

Purpose: Each year the Friends of the GHI awards the Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize for the two best doctoral dissertations submitted in German history, German-American relations, or the history of Germans in North America. The winners are invited to the GHI to present their research at the annual symposium of the Friends each November. Candidates are nominated by their dissertation advisers each spring; nominees must have completed their dissertation at a North American university during the previous academic year. The prizewinners receive an award of $2,000 and reimbursement for travel to Washington, D.C. Focus: History; German Studies Qualif.: Applicant must be: full-time student. For one weekend in the spring young scholars have the opportunity to present their work to peers and distinguished academics from both sides of the Atlantic. The stipend covers travel and lodging expenses. The forum is conducted in English, and its topic varies yearly, spanning the Middle Ages to the present. The deadline for applications is January 10.
